SYNOPSIS

"Every Other Weekend" is a day-in-the-life story about the volatile relationship between a strong willed 10 year old girl and her misguided alcoholic mother. The film stars actress Keala Settle (Tony nominated Broadway veteran who stars as the Bearded Lady in the movie musical, The Greatest Showman) and two highly talented child actors - Angelina Palma and Julian Lerner.

At the outset of the film, tensions run deep between Mom and daughter, Ruby, as the two attempt to navigate a relationship that has become strained as a result of Mom’s drinking habit. When Ruby tells her mother that she has given up music to instead pursue art, Mom takes this news as a personal rejection of everything she stands for and values. This small conflict sets into motion a day that quickly spirals out of control. As Mom fails to stay sober, Ruby is forced to make a decision that risks disaster for all.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

The opportunity to make "EVERY OTHER WEEKEND" is a dream come true for me. Although the film has intense and heart wrenching moments, it is ultimately a story of self awareness and insight that often only come when one is down in the ugliest of places. From within these low and dark moments - just when it seems like there is no way out - there is a glimmer of insight and humility, and therefore the possibility of a way forward.

This is the story of "EVERY OTHER WEEKEND". It is a story about overcoming these dark and ugly moments and translating them into a opportunities for personal growth and empowerment. It may not be clean or with elegance and grace, but sometimes survival is simply about the creativity of figuring a way out. For 11 year old Ruby, she must rise up and take control of an out of control situation by whatever means necessary. It is a sad and tragic reality that many children are put in this position at a young age, but it is a reality that I feel is important to shed light on and portray. This film is not about glamorizing or celebrating this predicament, but rather it is an effort to bring a voice to a dysfunctional family dynamic that is rarely depicted in film.

The ending of the film depicts the daughter offering a simple solution to a much larger problem. It is an effort to help cover up her mother’s mis-steps, and her own for that matter. This moments becomes a perfect metaphor for the messy dynamic of dysfunctional families - a way to patch things up and move forward. They don’t always fit perfectly but they are good enough to patch a gaping hole... and sometimes a patch work job is enough to plug the hole.

This is what "EVERY OTHER WEEKEND" is all about; moving forward with what you have, in this imperfect place with these imperfect people, to live to fight another day.
